Great location, charm, but some issues to be aware of.. I enjoy an interesting boutique hotel, especially one that is a former 17th century palace that has been renovated to keep much of its old world charm. Hotel dei Barbieri is charming and unique in the best, most convenient and eclectic neighborhood to visit Rome. However, there were some issues as a customer that really turned me off and I feel need to be mentioned.
CONS-
- I did not prepay - I put an Amex down to hold three rooms, however three weeks before my arrival the hotel reached out and said they are sorry but an accidental charge in full was made and their bank has been notified to reverse it. I waited patiently each day for this reversal and it never came through. When I reached out to follow up on the reversal I got such a run around from the staff that the bank is working on it. In business, if you put a credit card reversal in it happens within days, but for it to never happen even through my arrival date is unacceptable. I can only surmise that this hotel must be having cash flow issues and needed my money prior to arrival, and if so they never offered any consolation for my inconvenience (like maybe extending a prepaid rate since I did in fact technically prepay) . In fact there was no sincere apology even when I arrived. I’m still so annoyed by this.
- I found the staff to not be super customer service friendly- why work at a hotel if you don’t want to deal with people. With the exception of Sophia at the front desk, and the lovely woman in the breakfast room who made the best cappuccino and was so sweet, they never smiled and it felt like they were doing you a favor if you asked for help with anything.
- My room was overlooking the street and it was so noisy- all day and night. There is a train that turns right by the hotel which screeches so loudly that it was maddening and hard to fall asleep.
PRO’S-
- Unique rooms, my daughter had a beautiful fresco on her ceiling, wonderful amenities, and the showers were amazing. You can walk up a beautiful staircase to get to floor two and just imagine many historical figures climbing those same steps in the 17th century. Other reviews complained about hard bed/pillow- I found bed comfortable. Also beware of steps all over the room, especially if not paying attention as my sister fell several times but thankfully the room was not so big that the bed broke her fall.
- Location can’t be beat- we walked to Trastavere, Jewish Ghetto, and shopped in street leading to Campo de Fiore.
- The breakfast room was wonderful, the food was yummy and as I mentioned managed by a sweet woman with great cappuccino skills.
While would try a different hotel if I visit Rome
again, I do look back with fond memories, but just beware of some of the issues I faced.. .

Beautiful but sparse, functional rooms. My family of 5 stayed in a a 2 bed room/1 bath suite room which is beautiful if you really like ultramodern Italian, minimalist design. King platform bed with plenty of built in storage but the shelf over the bed is a bit low and ai hit my head on it and ai am of average height. Fridge and in room safe were in the cabinet. Room has hot water kettle and instant coffee and tea is provided. Other room had two twin beds with a roll away bed for third kid. Main bedroom was quite large but only other furniture was a built in stand, shelving for TV and a strange but pretty mirror/glass, small breakfast table and two breakfast/modern chairs. More seating would have been appreciated and the room was large enough for it. Bathroom was beautiful with floor to ceiling glass shower and large floating marble sink but no counter space. Water pressure was good. AC and wifi were fine. There was a beautiful fresco on ceiling in lobby and stairs were pretty. Overall pretty hotel room that was not the most comfortable or functional but I guess that could be expected given the photos of the hotel. Staff were perfectly courteous.. .

Exceptional. Lovely team at the front desk, amazing hotel and location is perfect. Very atmospheric and the perfect place to stay in Rome.. People should be made aware that there are no on-site facilities ie room service etc or any food service etc Other that that it is perfect.

Worst Experience. We booked Dei Barbieri Rome for one of our guests, but the hotel was a disaster. The rooms were outdated and broken, and the service was subpar. The property was unclean, with filth everywhere. To make matters worse, they tried to charge my guest extra for using the minibar, which they didn't even use! It wasn't until my guest disputed the charge at checkout that they finally removed it from the bill. Overall, the experience was terrible, and I would not recommend this property to anyone.". .

Can’t wait to be back at Hotel Dei Barbieri!. It’s my third time in Rome & at the Hotel! Each time is even better. The location, the staff, the hospitality & the rooms! They are super comfy and they can’t be prettier! I want to come back asap! Best choice ever.
The breakfast is great as well!. Nothing. I like everything..
